about

A wholly improvised album. Profound and eloquent, epic, haunting and dramatic, Adam Summerhayes’s ‘utterly compelling’ playing (BBC Music magazine) entwines with Murray Grainger’s subtly woven tapestries of sound — unpredictable and powerful. Traditional rebellion at its best. UNTOLD.

RULES FOR RECORDING AN ALBUM
1. Prepare – work out the repertoire and arrangements before entering the studio
2. Rehearse – ensure that you know the material thoroughly
3. Allow plenty of time – record each track a number of times

This album follows none of these rules
‣ No preparations were made
‣ No rehearsals took place
‣ No track was played more than once

The result?
‣ A stream of consciousness born from the folk tradition
‣ An epic soundtrack without a film
‣ A folk symphony
‣ A story without words

Adam Summerhayes has been described as a ‘Paganini of the traditional violin’ (fRoots) and his remarkable playing has been lauded worldwide: ; ‘Astonishing, all-out virtuosity’. (New York Times); “Intoxicating ... virtuoso fiddle playing” (The Times); ‘breath-taking violin wizardry’ (stuff.co.nz). “the direct descendant of the devil’s violinist Paganini” (Badische Zeitung)
Summerhayes tempted master accordionist Murray Grainger into a musical experiment - a quest to create music in the moment, with no conscious thought between conception and playing, and to search for unexpected magic in the hope of finding a deeper and more revealing narrative.

The resulting disc comprises two epic sweeping tracks - around fifty minutes of music - closing with a short, prayer-like, Epilogue.
