about

The Song of the Old Mother

A poem by William Butler Yeats that first appeared in The Wind Among the Reeds anthology, published in 1899. Its poignant, simple imagery gains nothing from reading literary criticism and interpretations, or from knowledge of details of Yeats’s life and (curious) beliefs.

One of the early ideas behind this album was to explore the idea of the hidden workers, the un-appreciated, the secret-lifeblood of our society’s history, though this idea also expanded and diverted as iniquities were discussed and as sudden inspirations struck. To Adam, though, this poem conjured the image of his grandmother: always awake in the dawn with the fire lit long before the family appeared, the very image of the under- appreciated, ‘hidden’ worker, the archetypal mother ‘labouring under the patriachal yoke’, as some might describe it.

The beauty of the poem stuck in the trio’s minds and, at the end of the last day of recording, Kirsty suggested that they record it. It was a beautiful way to finish the recording process.

lyrics

Poem by William Butler Yeats

I rise in the dawn, and I kneel and blow
Till the seed of the fire flicker and glow.
And then I must scrub, and bake, and sweep,
Till stars are beginning to blink and peep;
But the young lie long and dream in their bed
Of the matching of ribbons, the blue and the red,
And their day goes over in idleness,
And they sigh if the wind but lift up a tress.
While I must work, because I am old
And the seed of the fire gets feeble and cold.
